Student Insurance: An Absolute Necessity

by HBW on July 22, 2009

Gone were the days when obtaining student insurance was optional for parents. These days, schools require their students to have some type of insurance coverage. Whether in the elementary grades, high school or college level, student insurance is a must for peace of mind of parents and school administrators alike.

The most common type of student insurance is health insurance coverage which is surprisingly affordable. There is a bewildering array of options and plans available such as 24-hour cover, at school only coverage and some form of extended dental cover too. For parents of grade school pupils, there is no substitute for peace of mind with the right type of insurance cover. There is even liability insurance for bullying cases especially in middle schools and high schools where school violence is rampant.

College-level students are required to procure some type of student insurance for extra protection. Some colleges allow students to stay on their parent’s health insurance but this is an exception. Anyway, student insurance is very affordable with plans offered on a semester basis instead of annually to make insurance payments light on the budget.

Schools have an ulterior motive why they require student insurance. Surveys have shown that most drop-outs were primarily due to unforeseen medical expenses incurred during a health crisis or emergency. The unplanned expenses prevented parents from re-enrolling their kids to school. Having student insurance also shifts the burden away from school-maintained health clinics and reduces the school’s administrative costs.

Student insurance is very useful for students who intend to study in another state or in another country. There is no substitute for preparedness and this is true for those who want to obtain a prestigious university degree overseas such as Ivy League schools. Be sure to obtain your student insurance from a reliable provider. The first order is to have an international student travel insurance that covers you from your home country to the destination country. Once there, you need to obtain another health insurance in the country of study. Or you may procure both types of insurance at once before you leave.

Besides those basic types of insurance, there are other kinds of student insurance that you need to know about such as student car insurance (for those who drive to and back from school), student possessions insurance (coverage for personal belongings from theft), student accommodations insurance (home contents in the boarding house such as furniture, books, personal computer, laptop, etc.) and student sports insurance (for those who engage in varsity and inter-collegiate sports activities). Whatever is the type of risk that you are insuring against, you can bet it is worth your premium payment.
